What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Have you ever cracked a filling while enjoying a meal with friends or slipped on slick asphalt and lost a crown? Dental emergencies are sometimes an unfortunate part of life, but sometimes they happen even when we’re doing everything right. Centre Family Dentistry offers emergency dental care appointments to our patients and neighbors in Fort Collins, CO.

#1 Broken or Fractured Tooth

Biting down too hard or having an injury, cavity, or infection can crack or break a tooth. It’s essential to treat it quickly to avoid further damage to your mouth and infection.

#2 Bleeding and Swelling That Doesn’t Stop

Though some bleeding and swelling are expected after oral surgery, it’s concerning if it continues because it can point to an infection or disease.

#3 Damaged or Lost Filling

Dental fillings strengthen and protect teeth with previous cavities. If the filling gets damaged or falls off, bacteria and food can easily get trapped in the nooks and crannies of your tooth. If you have lost or damaged dental fillings, please give us a call to get them replaced or repaired. The same goes for dental crowns and other restorations.

#4 Tooth Pain or Sensitivity

Tooth pain may seem insignificant initially, but untreated toothaches can quickly spiral out of control. A toothache can mean infection, deep decay, or disease, but your emergency dentist can provide you with the prompt treatment you need.

#5 Knocked-Out Tooth

A dislodged tooth isn't as common as other emergencies on this list, but it does still happen. A knocked-out tooth must be reinserted quickly, or the natural tooth can die. First, call us so we can get you in to see the doctor.

Locate the dislodged tooth if possible, and rinse it with lukewarm water without touching its root (the bottom part of the tooth). You may try to gently reinsert it back in the socket, place it in a cup of milk or your saliva, and head to our dental office as quickly and safely as possible. If we're unable to reinsert the natural tooth, we will provide you with customized and lifelike tooth replacement options.
