Your team at Centre Family Dentistry can help. If you or a loved one suffer from sleep apnea or loud snoring, your Fort Collins dentist offers a simple solution that can help you get the rest you need to rejuvenate your mind and body.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

We poke fun at those who snore, but for many people, it’s no laughing matter. Chronic snoring that disrupts your sleep and keeps your family awake usually indicates the presence of OSA or obstructive sleep apnea.

Apnea is defined as a temporary cessation of breathing, usually during sleep. It occurs when you pass from light to deep sleep, and your tongue and the soft tissue and muscles in your throat relax.

This blocks the airway, and this blockage can cause the vibrations that create the noise we call snoring and can prevent you from breathing altogether. The lack of oxygen alerts your body to wake up and resume breathing. These episodes can occur without you realizing it and can occur multiple times a night. The result is restless sleep.

How Does Sleep Apnea Affect Your Life in Fort Collins?

In many cases, a person only realizes they have sleep apnea when their partner complains about their loud snoring or gasping for air. But several symptoms are obvious and common for those with sleep apnea:

How Does a Dentist Treat Sleep Apnea?

The standard of care for treating patients with sleep apnea is a CPAP mask that provides a continuous flow of positive air pressure as you sleep to keep your airway open. Unfortunately, many patients don’t like wearing the mask, so they go without and put their health at risk.
Dr. Jordan Humbert provides snoring and sleep apnea treatment for our Fort Collins patients using a customized oral appliance. The device fits over your teeth like a mouth guard but is designed to gently reposition your lower jaw in a slightly forward position, which keeps your airway open.
